New research reveals that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs should be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
